DOCK 2Back to school time at The DOCK!

Brevard Neighborhood Development Coalition operates The DOCK, a community center with outreach to neighborhood families, including summer programs for students. This summer's programs helped keep area youth ready to go back to school, with weekly programs focusing on math and reading.

Below is a recap of this summer's programs that helped insure area students were ready to go back to school "without suffering the effects of the Summer Slide that can occur over the summer holidays." To read this newsletter in its entirety, click here.

Hello Friends!

The DOCK is back to school after a fun filled and educational summer camp! During the eight-week summer program, groups of campers attended Codecraft camp, Foosaner Art camp, and Makers camp and basketball camp at Holy Trinity Episcopal Academy. Vacation Bible School came to the DOCK, thanks to Ascension Catholic Church, and the DOCK went to Vacation Bible School at Northside Presbyterian Church. We explored St. Augustine, visited Kennedy Space Center and even got to see a launch! More adventure was found at Andretti Thrill Park, the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, the Orlando Science Center, Busch Gardens, the Navy UDT – Seal Museum, FIT, Brevard Zoo, and the grave of Zora Neale Hurston. Campers even got hands on science lessons when BNDC Board Member and FIT Professor, Gordon Patterson, turned them into Zika Commandos!

Thank you to Harris Corporation and Community Foundation for Brevard for grants that made all of this fun and learning possible!

Most importantly, DOCK youth are back at school without suffering the effects of the "Summer Slide" - the loss of academic skills and knowledge that can occur over the summer holidays. Every Monday through Thursday, each child participated in the DOCK's brain power hour, where math and reading were the focus.

It was a busy summer but there is more work to be done and fun to be had! Thank you for your support!
