Habitat for Humanity of Lake-Sumter opens Domestic Global Village In Central Florida
The Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting for Domestic Global Village will take place on Monday, October 7th, in honor of World Habitat Day and Habitat For Humanity Lake-Sumter's 25th Anniversary, This European-style hostel, the first of its kind in Florida, will offer lodging to vacationing volunteers, or "volontourists." Habitat Lake-Sumter expects to host thousands of volunteers annually for a one-week stay, where the workers can be involved in Habitat construction as well as other volunteer opportunities in the area.
Florida Community Loan Fund provided low-interest financing to transform the buidling, once an annex of a local church, into an upscale 100-bed hostel, which includes a game room, movie room, wi-fi, and other amenities. The Domestic Global Village is a vision of Kent Adcock, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Lake-Sumter. In an article published by the Orlando Sentinel on October 1, Adcock is quoted as saying, "By the time I retire, I want to have it full every week. We believe that there will be a lot of great things that result from it."
