Miles Anderson, retired Mitigation Bureau Chief and State Hazard Mitigation Officer for the Florida Division of Emergency Management, passed away in November 2024.
During his career with the Division of Emergency Management, Mr. Anderson spearheaded the initiatives necessary for the State of Florida to attain Enhanced State status, at the time awarded by FEMA to only nine states, which resulted in an additional 5% funding during a major disaster declaration. He served as president of Rebuild Northwest Florida, overseeing a program that raised $4 million in private funds to repair homes damaged in Hurricane Ivan. In 2020 he was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Division of Emergency Management.
Mr. Anderson was commended numerous times by local officials who appreciated not only his integrity and “common sense” approach to mitigation, but also his kindness and desire to help survivors of disasters. His work with the Hurricane Ivan recovery effort earned him special recognition from Governor Jeb Bush, Escambia County, and the City of Pensacola.
He was a member of Florida Community Loan Fund’s Board of Directors and Lending Committee for many years, serving several terms between 2000 and 2014. He worked with Catholic Social Services, creating the organization’s infrastructure and managing the annual budget to provide food, clothing and shelter to individuals in need. He served on the board for several nonprofits, including FCLF and Florida Interfaith Networking in Disasters.
Miles was a proud Michigander and a member of the University of Michigan Alumni Association. Throughout his life, he was a member of several other fraternal and community service organizations. Miles was very faithful as a practicing Catholic and active with Catholic Charities of Northwest Florida.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. Miles will be missed for his tireless work and heartfelt contributions to FCLF and many other organizations.
